The 8.00 at Newcastle on Thursday is a typical Class 6 classified over 7f🏇⤵️👇

But it’s a race where understanding the setup is far more important than getting hung up on raw ratings.
This looks a strong pace scenario for the grade. Marcello Si is the only confirmed front runner and is unlikely to get an easy lead given the number of prominent racers behind. The overall shape points to a genuinely run race, with a fair chance of late pressure telling. That immediately brings hold-up performers and strong finishers into the equation.
Draw-wise, Newcastle’s straight track continues to favour those drawn low, especially in these lower-grade contests where positioning and simplicity matter. Stalls 1–5 hold a clear advantage, particularly for runners who don’t want to be forced wide or rely on luck in running.
All of that points firmly towards Woodrafff. He’s become a model of consistency in this grade and, crucially, at this track. A previous course-and-distance winner, he has the ideal profile for a race like this: travels well, finishes strongly, and is drawn in stall 2 which should allow him to track the pace and strike late. In a race lacking depth, he sets the standard.
I Can Boogy looks the main threat. Unlike many of these, she’s still open to improvement as a 4-year-old and has already shown she can operate effectively at this level. Her draw in stall 4 is another positive, and her run style fits the likely race shape. If she takes another step forward, she’s right in this.
Starshot is more exposed but is another who should be suited by how the race unfolds. He’s a strong finisher and will be doing his best work late, though stall 7 could leave him needing gaps at the right time. He’s reliable but not quite as well positioned as the top two.
There are a few at bigger prices who aren’t completely dismissed. Pebble Dash is still relatively unexposed and has shaped like a horse who could benefit from a stronger pace, while Yorkstone often travels well enough to get involved before finding less than expected late.
At the other end, Marcello Si is likely to have his moment in front but looks vulnerable in the closing stages, while wide-drawn runners like Esque Elegance and Chriss Mate will need things to fall perfectly to overcome their positions.
In summary, this is a race where the pace and draw align neatly with the most solid profile in the field. Woodrafff looks set to get the race run to suit and is the one to beat, with I Can Boogy the obvious danger as a progressive type in the right part of the track.
