The 4.10 at Newbury🏇⤵️👇

·

The 4.10 at Newbury looks a straightforward five-runner handicap on paper, but the pace map tells a very different story. This is a race that is likely to be decided less by raw ability and more by how the early fractions play out.
Three of the five – Escapeandevade, Palacio and Xcitations – are habitual front runners. Not only do they like to go forward, they need to. That immediately creates a problem: there is only one lead to go around. With a strong early pressure rating of 4.89, this sets up a contested pace scenario where none of them are likely to get an easy time of it.
In races like this, especially over a sharp enough trip at Newbury, a battle for the lead often results in the principals weakening late on. That brings stamina and finishing effort firmly into play.
Escapeandevade tops the HRB figures and will likely head the market, but he is vulnerable. His run style leaves him exposed in a pace war and his profile suggests he doesn’t always find much off the bridle. Palacio and Xcitations have even less going for them in this setup, both repeatedly showing a tendency to weaken when the pressure is on.
That shifts the focus to those ridden with more restraint.
Kotmask has the figures and arrives in form, and his finishing effort is a clear positive. However, he is not straightforward. His run style has been inconsistent and in a small field like this, tactical positioning is everything. If he gets it wrong or finds trouble, he’s beatable.
Koukeo, on the other hand, looks tailor-made for how this race should unfold. He doesn’t need the lead, he travels comfortably just off the pace, and crucially, he finishes his races strongly. His recent comment profile backs that up, and in a race where others are likely to overdo things early, that ability to stay on late is a major asset.
There is also very little between the top three on HRB ratings, so this isn’t a case of needing to find improvement. It’s about who gets the race run to suit.
All things considered, this looks set up for something coming from just off the speed, and Koukeo fits that bill better than anything else in the field.
Selection: Koukeo (FR)
Confidence: Medium
