4.22 Wincanton – Mares’ Handicap Chase (3m1f)🏇⤵️👇

This is a small-field race but tactically it’s far from simple. The pace map tells you everything you need to know — there will be no freebies up front.
Lagonda and Moviddy are both habitual front runners and neither is likely to hand it over. That creates a properly run race, not a crawl, and over this trip on good ground that matters. It’s unlikely to be a messy stop-start affair — more a case of who can sustain it longest.
Moviddy, last year’s winner, looks set to play her usual role forcing the pace. She’s reliable at the track and trip but her profile suggests she can come under pressure late, especially if taken on early. In this setup, she looks more like a contributor to the race shape than the one to benefit from it.
Taxus Baccata is the obvious one on figures. She tops the HRB ratings comfortably and arrives in winning form. On paper, she’s the one to beat. The issue is how she gets there. She tends to race prominently without dominating and has a habit of not quite finishing things off strongly. In a race where the tempo is likely honest, that leaves her slightly vulnerable — she could end up caught between chasing the leaders and holding off closers.
Minniemum is the wildcard. She’s the one with a clear late finishing profile and if things do get stretched, she’ll be staying on when others have cried enough. The problem is her inconsistency. Recent runs include non-completions and in a four-runner race you can’t afford to give ground or rely on everything falling apart.
That brings it back to Lagonda.
She’s the most interesting tactically because she combines front-running intent with the ability to finish. That’s a valuable trait in a race like this. Even if she doesn’t get an uncontested lead, she’s shown she can absorb pressure and still find at the end, which is more than can be said for the others.
Her recent profile is solid, her running style is reliable, and her trainer has a decent record at the track. In a race where others have questions — either about finishing effort or consistency — she makes the most sense.
Verdict: Lagonda
She may have to work for it, but she looks the one most likely to cope with how this race will unfold.
Confidence: Medium
