The 4.40 at Kempton looks a good example of why race shape matters just as much as raw ability.
HorseRaceBase has Sonic Pioneer on top of the ratings at 173.2, clear of the rest, and that immediately puts him in the conversation. But the stronger angle is the way this race is likely to be run.
The Comment Shaper points to a strong pace scenario. There is only one likely front runner, but there are plenty of prominent racers behind, and that creates the possibility of a contested early gallop. In a two-mile handicap hurdle round Kempton on good ground, that can leave those ridden patiently in a very good spot turning for home.
That brings Sonic Pioneer firmly into play. He is one of the few in the field flagged as a strong late finisher, and that is exactly the profile to want if the race unfolds as expected. He does not need to get involved in the early battle, and if the principals up front do too much too soon, he has the finishing kick to capitalise.
There is risk, and it needs saying plainly. His recent form includes two pulled-up efforts, which is why he cannot be called a bombproof selection. He is also marked as a slightly unpredictable type. Even so, the upside is obvious. He is a course-and-distance winner, still has scope as a 4yo, and his overall HRB figure says he has the best recent body of form in the race.
The obvious alternative is High Fibre. He also looks well suited by the pace map, Harry Fry’s recent figures are solid, and he has a dependable enough profile for this grade. If Sonic Pioneer fails to fire, High Fibre is the one most likely to pick up the pieces late.
Hes A Latchico is respected, but there is a concern that he may be too involved too early. The Comment Shaper note that he often weakens badly is not what you want to see in a race with this much potential pressure. Takeit Easy has some place claims and arrives off a decent effort, but at his age he looks more vulnerable than some of the younger legs if this turns into a proper end-to-end gallop.
So the race comes down to a simple view. If the pace holds up, the prominent racers dominate and one of the obvious ones takes it. But if the shape plays out as the data suggests, this is there to be won by a closer.
On that basis, Sonic Pioneer is the pick.
