The Irish Flat season gets underway at Naas, sitting in clear contrast to the attritional jumping test at Carlisle and the quicker, controlled surface at Exeter.
Different tracks, different demands. The key today is simple: align horses with conditions and ignore surface-level market noise.
The Standout Bets
Straight Up (5:30 Naas)
The clear class angle on the card.
By Wootton Bassett, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore (36% strike-rate here), he showed a marked improvement when encountering soft ground at Listowel. His Newmarket run on quicker ground is best ignored.
Back on testing ground, his current mark looks lenient relative to what he could be.
Fortunefavorsdbold (3:37 Exeter)
The strongest handicap angle in the list.
Raised just 2lb for a Leicester second where she finished 20 lengths clear of the third. That’s a piece of form the market often underplays.
With Harry Cobden booked and conditions to suit, she sets the standard.
Egbert (3:02 Exeter)
A pure stamina play.
From a Christian Williams yard that targets marathon chases, he already proved his engine over 3m4f at Haydock. Today’s 3m6f is right in his wheelhouse.
This becomes a test of endurance — exactly what he wants.
Value & Each-Way Angles
Beset (4:22 Naas)
Listed Devoy Stakes runner with solid credentials.
Likely to be outpaced at points by a progressive type like Shaool, but her strength is stamina. In heavy ground, that becomes a major asset late on.
She’ll be doing her best work at the finish.
Sanctijude (4:57 Naas)
Still a maiden, but reliable.
Consistent RPRs in the 80s give her a strong baseline in a race where many lack proven ability in testing ground.
She’s not flashy, but she’s dependable — ideal each-way material.
Brady Hartsfield (5:12 Limerick)
A structural play rather than a pure form one.
In Irish bumpers, the Mullins/McConnell link — especially with P.W. Mullins booked — is often a stronger signal than bare form.
Worth respecting on that basis alone.
The Caution List
Just For Dad (5:02 Carlisle)
Market weakness is the issue.
Drifting from 15/8 to 2/1 in a bumper is rarely a positive sign. These races are yard-dependent, and that move suggests something isn’t quite right at home.
Watch the market.
Penn Avenue (2:45 Carlisle)
Solid but limited.
Consistent profile, but lacks a turn of foot. In races like this, that often leaves you vulnerable.
Only of interest if backed late by strong, sustained money.
