2.00 Southwell – Handicap Chase Preview🏇⤵️👇

·

This looks a straightforward race on paper, but the shape tells the real story.
HRB identifies a single front runner in Copshill Lad, but crucially he’s a weak one and faces solid pressure from three prominent racers. Over 3m3½f, that’s rarely a winning setup. He’s unlikely to get an easy lead and even less likely to see it out strongly.
That immediately shifts the focus to horses who can travel just off the pace and finish.
The Key Player
Smurfette stands out on every meaningful metric. She tops the HRB ratings by a clear margin and comes here off the strongest last run figure in the field. More importantly, her run style fits the race perfectly — she can sit handy without getting involved in the early burn-up and she’s proven to finish her races off strongly.
In a race where the leader looks vulnerable and others have stamina doubts, she’s the one most likely to be produced late and assert.
The Dangers
Icaque De Lisle will travel well and should be in the right position, but he has a habit of weakening late, which is a major concern at this trip in this setup.
Lilting Verse is more interesting. She lacks the class edge of the favourite but is a genuine strong finisher and should be staying on when others have cried enough. If anything picks up the pieces, it’s her.
Copshill Lad looks set for a hard time up front, while I Am Rocco will be doing his best work late without looking good enough to win.
The Bottom Line
This race is unlikely to be won from the front. The pace setup points firmly towards a stalker with stamina, and Smurfette is the only one who fully matches that profile and brings the best form.
She doesn’t need things to fall perfectly — just a fair test, which she’s almost certain to get.
Selection: Smurfette
Verdict: Strong
