This is a poor Class 5 mares’ handicap where ability is limited and the pace map is even worse. No confirmed front runner, only moderate early pressure, and a field full of inconsistent types. That usually produces a steadily run race that turns into a sprint from the last two flights.
In those scenarios, you want one thing: a mare who can actually finish.
The Shape of the Race
The Comment Shaper is clear — no pace, low collapse risk, and a cluster of prominent racers. That means positioning will matter, but more importantly, turn of foot late on will decide it.
Most of these either:
travel OK and weaken, or
plug on at one pace
Very few actually pick up.
The One That Fits
Lady Caro (IRE) stands out.
Top on HRB ratings and, more importantly, she’s one of the few in here with a proper late finish. Her recent runs all read the same — outpaced, staying on, doing her best work late, occasionally unlucky. That’s exactly what you want in a race likely to be run steadily before lifting late.
She won’t be winning by miles, but she doesn’t need to. She just needs to be within striking distance turning in.
The Danger
Newmill Getaway (IRE) is the obvious threat.
Consistent, reliable, and keeps finding. The issue is she’s more of a grinder than a quickener. If this turns tactical, she could get first run and make it awkward. But if it becomes a proper sprint, she may just get outpaced by something sharper.
The Rest
My Louise has a decent profile for this setup but is too unreliable to trust fully.
Miss Tiara will be doing her best work late, but she’s reliant on things falling perfectly and doesn’t quite have the class edge.
The remainder look exposed, one-paced, or simply not good enough.
Conclusion
This isn’t a race to get clever with. The pace setup points strongly towards a late sprint, and in a field full of weak finishers, Lady Caro is the one who actually finishes her race properly.
She’s not bombproof — no one in this race is — but she’s the most logical fit given how this is likely to unfold.
