This is a weak Class 5 chase where you don’t need to be clever — you need to be disciplined. The HRB ratings do most of the heavy lifting, and as usual, the winner is highly likely to come from the top two.
Lelant sits clear at the top of the TimeWise ratings and that alone puts him firmly in the spotlight. Prior to his last run, he’d put together back-to-back wins and looked like a horse ahead of the handicapper. The pulled-up effort last time is the obvious blot, but in races like this you’re often weighing upside against reliability — and Lelant still brings the most upside.
Tactically, he’s well suited. This doesn’t look a strongly run race despite a confirmed front runner in Boys Of Wexford, who has a habit of weakening when it matters. That should allow Lelant to sit handy, travel into it, and take control turning for home. His previous course and distance win is another solid tick.
Line Of Descent is the obvious danger and the only one that makes any real appeal against the favourite. He’s consistent, tends to race prominently, and will be in the right place throughout. The issue is whether he has the finishing kick to go past Lelant if that one runs his race.
Chief Black Robe, despite being third on ratings, looks opposable. He’s repeatedly shown a tendency to weaken late, and in a race that will likely be decided in the final stages, that’s a major negative.
Of the rest, Warners Cross will be staying on late, but the pace setup doesn’t look strong enough to play to his strengths. He’s more of a place player than a win threat.
This race should be straightforward. The top-rated horse gets the right setup, has already shown he can win here, and is the only one in the field with recent winning form of note.
Selection: Lelant
If he bounces back from that last run, he wins. If he doesn’t, Line Of Descent likely picks up the pieces — and nothing else makes much appeal.
Confidence: Medium
