This is a proper staying test at Hexham – 4m1f around here on good ground still demands relentless stamina and a willing attitude. These races are rarely pretty and usually decided by who keeps going when others have had enough.
The race shape is solid and reliable (5/5), with two front runners expected to go on and set a fair tempo. The key point is the low collapse risk. That matters. It suggests this won’t turn into a complete burn-up where everything falls apart for closers – instead it should favour horses who can sit handy or just behind the pace and grind it out.
Looking at the field through that lens, a few can be marked down straight away.
Jo Coko has ability and comes here in form, but his profile is patchy. He has a habit of travelling well and then weakening, and this trip will expose any stamina doubts. At around 3/1, he looks short enough given the question marks.
Wal Bucks is one of the likely pace angles. He can finish his races, but being involved in the early tempo here is not ideal. Hexham marathons punish those who do too much too soon, and he could set it up for something sitting just off him.
The two notable closers, Rob Roy Macgregor and Shighness, will be doing their best work late on. Both are strong stayers on the figures, but the race setup doesn’t fully play to deep closers. With no strong indication of a pace collapse, they may be left with too much ground to make up.
That brings it neatly to Planned Paradise.
He tops the HRB ratings and, more importantly, fits the shape of the race perfectly. His run style is ideal – he sits off the pace, travels within himself and keeps finding. The Comment Shaper repeatedly flags him as one who stays on, and that is exactly what you want in a race like this.
He arrives in form, is consistent, and has already shown he can see his races out strongly. There are no obvious quirks or red flags in his profile, which is more than can be said for most of these.
In a race where many have questions – about stamina, pace pressure, or reliability – he is the one with the fewest doubts and the most suitable profile.
This may not be spectacular, but it looks straightforward.
Selection: Planned Paradise (IRE)
Verdict: Strong
