Kempton 6.00 – Virgin Bet Handicap (Div 2)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a typical Class 6 mile where ability is limited and the race is more likely to be decided by positioning and pace than anything flashy. The Comment Shaper is strong (5/5), so the shape read should be trusted.
There are two front runners in Scenario and Senseofentitlement, but neither is dominant. That points to an honest rather than aggressive gallop. Importantly, there are no prominent racers to control things just behind, which often leaves these races sitting up for a horse tracking the pace rather than one coming from the clouds.
The market will naturally gravitate towards the obvious strong finishers. Volendam, Dubai Harbour and Whiteley Way all tick that box on paper, and all three have profiles suggesting they’ll be doing their best work late. Volendam in particular arrives in form and looks solid, but she does rely on things falling right and isn’t one you’d fully trust in a tight finish.
Dubai Harbour is similar – consistent enough and often thereabouts, but his run style leaves him hostage to how the race unfolds. If the pace isn’t strong enough, he could simply have too much to do.
Whiteley Way has ability but is too inconsistent and can make life difficult at the start. In a race where track position matters, that’s a negative.
The more interesting angle sits with Port Noir. He’s the top-rated runner on the HRB figures and, more importantly, has the right tactical profile. He tends to sit just off the speed, which in this sort of race is a major advantage. He won’t need luck in running to the same extent as the closers and should get first run when it matters.
Scenario will ensure the race is run at a fair clip, but is unlikely to dominate throughout and may end up setting things up for something sitting just behind.
In races like this, especially at Kempton, it often pays to side with the horse that gets the cleanest, simplest trip rather than the one with the strongest finish on paper.
Port Noir fits that bill best.
