This is a poor Class 6 and it should be treated as such. Most of these have had plenty of chances and know how to get beaten. In races like this, discipline matters — stick to the ratings and don’t get clever.
The TimeWise Master figures point firmly towards Spirit Of Bowland, who tops the list with a clear edge. That alone puts him front and centre. Historically, these races are dominated by the top two rated, and there’s no reason to deviate here.
The shape of the race is straightforward. Sold Out is the only front runner and is likely to get an uncontested lead. Normally that’s a major positive at Southwell, especially with such a weak early pace setup. The problem is simple — he doesn’t finish his races. He’s repeatedly shown he weakens late, and that’s hard to ignore even in a race lacking depth.
That leaves the race open for something to pick up the pieces late on.
Spirit Of Bowland fits that mould best. He’s consistent, stays on, and doesn’t rely on things falling perfectly. He won’t be far away and should be doing his best work late. In this grade, that level of reliability counts for plenty.
Brother Dave is the obvious danger. He’s a strong finisher and comes out second on the ratings, which is exactly where you’d expect the main threat to sit. The concern is his hold-up style in a race that may not be run to suit. If they crawl early, he could simply run out of track.
The rest are either too inconsistent, badly positioned tactically, or simply not good enough on the numbers.
In short, don’t overthink it. The front runner looks vulnerable despite the setup, and the race should fall to one of the top two on ratings.
Selection: Spirit Of Bowland
Saver: Brother Dave
Verdict: Medium Confidence
The ratings are solid, but the lack of pace and messy race dynamics stop this being a strong play.
