6.00 Chelmsford – Pace Meltdown Sets It Up for a Closer🏇⤵️👇

·

This 6f handicap looks straightforward on the surface, but the Comment Shaper tells a different story. There’s a proper pace battle brewing with two confirmed front runners and pressure from prominent racers just behind. The overall shape is rated very strong with a high collapse risk — in plain terms, they’re likely to go too hard early and set it up for something coming late.
That immediately shifts the focus away from anything on the speed. Horses like Ziggys Condor and Gold Star Hero could easily take each other on and pay the price late. In races like this at Chelmsford, when the pace lifts beyond comfort, it’s usually the strong finisher who picks up the pieces.
From an HRB perspective, the race revolves around the top two.
Combustion sits clear at the head of the ratings and comes here in serious form. He’s won four of his last five and, crucially, has the right run style for this setup. He doesn’t need to lead, can sit just off the pace, and is consistently strong at the finish. In a race where others are likely to weaken, that’s a major asset.
He’s not entirely straightforward — his run style has varied — but that versatility is actually a positive here. He should get a clean tow into the race and be produced late, which is exactly what’s needed.
Lazzar is the obvious danger. He’s also a strong finisher and has course form, but he can be a bit more hit-and-miss in how he’s ridden. If he ends up too far back or poorly positioned, he may have too much to do. That said, if things fall apart up front as expected, he’ll be finishing strongly.
The rest look up against it for win purposes. Tyger Bay will be doing his best work late but is inconsistent and not getting any younger. Hunky Dory and the pace angles look vulnerable given how the race is likely to unfold.
Everything points to this being set up for a closer, and the numbers strongly favour one horse.
Verdict: Combustion
Saver: Lazzar
Strength: Strong
