This 7f handicap revolves around one thing: pace — and too much of it.
The Comment Shaper flags a very strong shape with high collapse risk, and it’s hard to argue. Two front runners and a stack of prominent racers means this will be run at a proper clip. Around Lingfield, that’s often a recipe for those forcing it early to fold late.
So the focus shifts quickly: who is best positioned to pick up the pieces?
Ratings Don’t Lie
The HRB TimeWise figures point firmly to the top two:
Sergeant Pep (Rank 1)
One More (Rank 2)
Historically, that’s where the winner usually sits, and there’s no compelling reason to go fishing outside that pair here.
The Case for One More
One More looks tailor-made for how this race should unfold.
He’s not a tearaway, but he won’t be miles back either. His run style suggests he’ll sit just off the speed — exactly where you want to be when the leaders start to feel it. More importantly, his profile is rock solid: consistent, reliable, and a proven strong finisher.
The draw in stall 3 is another plus. He should get a clean position early without wasting energy, and that could prove decisive when others are under pressure turning in.
In a race likely to be decided late, he’s the one most likely to be finishing best.
The Main Threat
Sergeant Pep tops the ratings and commands respect. He’s capable and consistent enough, but there’s a slight concern around how he gets into the race.
He tends to race prominently, and in this setup, that’s not ideal. There’s a risk he gets caught up in the early battle and has to work harder than ideal before the race really begins.
He’s good enough to be thereabouts, but tactically he’s not quite as well positioned as the selection.
The Rest
There are a few with late-running profiles — Dandy Khan in particular — but they’re either too inconsistent or too low in the ratings to be confident about. They may pass beaten horses late, but winning is another matter.
The likely front runners, including Giorgio M and No Return, look set to play their part in ensuring the race is run at a strong pace — but that may be their main contribution.
Verdict
This looks a classic Lingfield setup where the race falls apart late and is picked up by something sitting just off the speed.
One More fits the bill better than anything else — tactically sound, strong at the finish, and backed up by the ratings.
Selection: One More (IRE)
Saver: Sergeant Pep (IRE)
Strength: Strong
