8.15 Dundalk – Handicap Preview🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a fairly ordinary 0-60, but the shape of the race makes it more interesting than it looks at first glance.
The Comment Shaper flags up a key point straight away — there is no natural front runner. That usually means a steady early pace and a tactical affair. Only one runner is likely to go forward, and even that isn’t a guaranteed trailblazer. So expect something controlled rather than strongly run.
In these races, positioning is everything. Horses that rely on a strong gallop to bring their stamina into play often get caught out, while those who can sit handy and quicken tend to come out on top.
The Ratings Angle
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings point firmly towards the top of the market:
Storm Eric – clear Rank 1
Barretstown – Rank 2
Captain Hanley – Rank 3
Historically, that top two dominates these races, and there’s no strong reason to go hunting outside them here.
Storm Eric – The Solid Option
Storm Eric looks the most reliable package in the race.
He arrives in consistent form, is proven at Dundalk, and crucially has shown he can stay on strongly without needing a strong pace. That’s a big plus given how this race is likely to unfold.
His running style is flexible enough to sit midfield and move into it when needed, rather than being anchored at the back. In a race where others may get caught flat-footed, that’s a major advantage.
Barretstown – Likely Pace Angle
Barretstown could find himself in front or close to it by default. From stall 1, he should get a handy position and might even control things for a while.
The problem is a familiar one — he often travels well but doesn’t finish his race off strongly. In a steadily run contest, that leaves him vulnerable to anything with a turn of foot late on.
He’s the obvious danger, but not an entirely convincing one.
Captain Hanley – The Eye-Catcher
Captain Hanley is the one that will catch the eye in running.
He’s a strong finisher and often unlucky, but his style is a concern here. In a race lacking pace, hold-up horses regularly leave themselves with too much to do. He’ll be finishing, but whether he gets there in time is another matter.
Being only Rank 3 also puts him slightly against the usual winning profile.
Final Word
This looks like a race that will be decided by who can travel and quicken, not who stays best.
Storm Eric fits that bill better than the rest. He’s the top-rated runner, comes here in form, and has the right blend of tactical speed and finishing effort for a race that may turn into a sprint from the bend.
Barretstown may get first run but looks vulnerable late, while Captain Hanley is likely to be doing his best work when it’s all but over.
Selection: Storm Eric (IRE)
Confidence: Medium
