5.00 Southwell – Herakles can pick up the pieces🏇⤵️👇

·

This 5f handicap looks set to be run at a proper clip and that makes the shape of the race the key angle.
The Comment Shaper could hardly be clearer. There are four predicted front runners, a strong contest for the lead and a high collapse risk. In a sprint like this, that matters. When too many want the same bit of turf early, the race can fall apart late and set it up for something coming off the speed.
That is why I do not want to get too involved with the obvious pace horses, even though a few of them have solid enough claims on paper. Irish Dancer, Westgate Warrior, Colors Of Freedom and Street Life all look likely to be part of the early burn-up. One of them could cling on, but the percentage call is to side with a horse who should get the race run to suit.
The ratings point straight to Herakles. He is the TimeWise Master Rank 1 horse, and that matters. The top-ranked runner is where the strongest win strike rate tends to sit, so that has to be the starting point. In this case, the ratings and the likely shape line up neatly.
Herakles is not a tearaway. He is predicted to be ridden patiently and is marked down as a strong finisher. That is exactly what you want in a race where the pace looks likely to collapse. He should be able to sit off the early heat, keep out of trouble and come through late if the leaders overcook it.
There are dangers, of course. Irish Dancer is the obvious one. He is in good nick, has course-and-distance form and is more than capable at this level. The concern is that he may get dragged into going too hard too soon. That is the risk with so much pace around him.
Woodhay Whisper also makes some appeal as a late closer. She has a suitable run style for this set-up and could easily run better than her price suggests. But on the numbers she still comes up short of the main selection.
The negative with Herakles is that he is not one you would call bombproof. These low-grade sprints are rarely straightforward, and hold-up horses always need the gaps at the right time. Even so, this looks the right race for him. The pace should be there, the race should come back to him, and the ratings say he is the one they all have to beat.
Selection: Herakles (IRE)
Danger: Irish Dancer (IRE)
Confidence: Medium
