This is a race that will be decided less by ability and more by how it’s run.
The Comment Shaper makes it very clear—there is no pace. No confirmed front runner, very little early pressure, and a field dominated by hold-up types. That usually produces a steadily run race where those buried in midfield or further back simply run out of time.
In these scenarios, positioning is everything.
The HRB ratings point firmly towards Three Dons, who tops the figures by a clear margin. Normally, he wouldn’t be an obvious betting proposition given his tendency to find less than expected late on, but this setup changes things. He’s one of the few in the field who can race prominently, and in a race lacking pace, that is a major advantage. If ridden positively, he could end up dictating or at worst sitting right on the pace—first run counts for plenty here.
Bearwith, second on the ratings, has ability but is drawn wide in stall 15. In a slowly run race, that’s a serious negative. He risks being forced back or caught wide, and neither scenario is ideal. He looks more like a place contender than a winner.
The obvious dangers come from the strong finishers flagged by the Comment Shaper—Hashtagnotions and Relevant Range in particular. Both are consistent and finish their races well, but they are hostage to the pace. If this turns tactical, they may simply have too much ground to make up. Of the two, Hashtagnotions is better drawn and slightly more appealing.
The rest—Fire Eyes, Miners Gamble, Golspie—fit a similar mould. They’ll be staying on late, but likely when it’s too late.
Recent renewals don’t show a strong bias, but this year’s race is more extreme than most in terms of lack of early pace. That should not be ignored.
Verdict
This sets up for a horse ridden positively near the front, and that brings it back to the ratings.
Three Dons has the tactical edge and the strongest figures. In a race like this, that’s often enough.
Hashtagnotions is the main danger if things fall his way late.
