The 5.50 at Doncaster looks the sort of 5f handicap where the pace could easily undo plenty of the field.
Comment Shaper paints a clear picture. There are two front runners, plenty of pace around them, and the overall shape is marked up as very strong with a high collapse risk. In plain terms, this could be run too hard up front, which should suit something ridden with a bit of patience.
That immediately puts the focus on the stronger late finishers rather than the obvious pace angles.
From an HRB TimeWise Master point of view, the race should be centred on the top two in the ratings. That is where the best strike rate usually sits, and there is no good reason here to get too clever.
Charlie Mason is the top-rated runner and looks the percentage call. He comes here in good order, was only just denied last time, and his Comment Shaper profile is the right one for a race likely to fall apart late. He is generally seen sitting off the speed, he finishes his races well, and he looks far less messy than some of these from a run-style point of view.
The main danger is Juan Les Pins, who is second on the HRB figures and also has the right sort of finishing profile for this setup. He is respected, especially as a recent winner, but his profile is a bit less straightforward and in a race like this I would rather side with the one who looks more reliable tactically.
There are others with bits of appeal. Emperor Caradoc has been put up elsewhere and is capable, but he is only fifth on the HRB numbers and this looks a race where sticking close to the top of the ratings makes more sense. Impressor and Harry’s Halo are the types who may pass beaten horses late, but they need plenty to happen in front of them and both are some way down the list on the main figures.
The likely shape of the race is the key. If they go too hard early, and the data suggests that is very likely, this should set up for a horse delivered late rather than one involved in the battle from halfway.
Everything points back to Charlie Mason. He is the HRB rank one, he is in form, and he looks the runner most likely to get the race run to suit.
