This is not a race to overcomplicate. The data, ratings and recent form all point in one direction — and it’s fairly obvious.
The Comment Shaper suggests a steadily run race. No recognised front runner, only modest early pressure, and a low chance of the race collapsing. That matters. In these conditions, races often turn tactical, with positioning and a turn of foot late on proving decisive rather than pure stamina.
Even so, this isn’t a contest full of well-handicapped lurkers waiting to pounce. It’s a low-grade staying handicap, and those are typically won by horses who are simply better than their mark — and one horse stands out clearly on that front.
Granns Boy sits miles clear on the HRB TimeWise ratings. Not just top — but top by a significant margin. That’s exactly the profile you want to be with. Historically, Rank 1 dominates these races, and this is a textbook example.
He ended last season in excellent form, winning on the Flat over further and backing it up with a strong run over hurdles. That tells you two things: he stays well and he’s in form. The switch back to the Flat is no issue, and his mark still looks workable given what he achieved late last year.
The slight concern is the pace setup. He’s likely to be ridden with patience in a race that may not suit hold-up types. But in a field lacking depth, class often overrides tactics — and he has more of it than anything else in here.
Of the rest, Earthsong makes the most appeal as a danger. He’s unexposed, shaped well in a big-field handicap at the Curragh, and could still be ahead of his mark. However, he shares a similar run style concern and lacks the proven winning profile of the selection.
Others, like Kool One and You Make Me Smile, are solid enough but look held on ratings and don’t bring the same upside or consistency. Sir Allen is returning from a long absence and is hard to trust.
In short, this looks like a race where the favourite deserves to be favourite — and probably wins.
