4.00 Newcastle – Border Minstrel Handicap Hurdle🏇⤵️👇

·

This is not a deep race and the shape of it looks straightforward — steady early, tactical late. With no confirmed front runner, positioning will matter more than stamina, and that immediately narrows the field.
The starting point has to be the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, and as ever, the focus is on the top two.
Fingal’s Hill (Rank 1) is the obvious one. He won this race last year, arrives in decent nick, and is tactically versatile enough to sit handy in what looks a slowly run affair. In races like this, that counts for plenty. He’s solid, genuine and sets the standard.
That said, there’s no edge in his profile. He’s a 10-year-old who finds his level, and Comment Shaper backs up what we’ve seen before — he travels well but doesn’t always find much off the bridle. In a race that could turn into a sprint, that’s a concern rather than a strength.
Lawrenny (Rank 2) is the one who brings a bit of upside. Ignore the seasonal return — he needed it after a break. Prior to that he was progressive, stays well, and crucially is flagged as a strong late finisher. In a weak race, that ability to pick up off a slow pace is often decisive.
The key is track position. If he’s ridden too far back, he gives himself a problem. But if he’s kept within range turning in, he’s the one most likely to go past horses late.
The rest don’t convince.
Smokeringinthedark is too low in the ratings to trust and probably wants a stronger pace.
Rare Edition has become unreliable and doesn’t finish his races.
Haarar and Bold Light both need things to fall apart in front of them — unlikely given the projected pace.
So it comes down to the top two, as it often does.
Fingal’s Hill is the safe option and will run his race. But there’s little margin for error at the price, and he’s vulnerable to something with a better turn of foot.
Lawrenny has that edge.
