This is a typical low-grade mares’ handicap where the top of the ratings usually tells the story, and the TimeWise figures point firmly in one direction.
Service Minimum sits clear as Rank 1, and that matters. In these races, the top-rated horse wins far more often than not, and she also drops into weaker company after holding her own in better handicaps. The Market Rasen run reads better than the bare result and this is the easiest assignment she’s had for a while.
The concern is tactical. Comment Shaper and Timeform both suggest a slowly run race with no natural front-runner, which is not ideal for a hold-up mare. She will likely be played late, and in steadily run races that can leave too much to do.
That said, she’s also the strongest finisher in the field by some margin, and in Class 5 company, races often fall apart late regardless of how they’re run on paper. If she gets even a half-decent tow into it, she should be finishing over the top of these.
Eastern Shores is the obvious alternative and the only one to take seriously against her. She’s Rank 2, arrives in decent nick, and should be better suited by the likely race position. The step up in trip could unlock a bit more, and she’s tactically more straightforward.
The issue is her lack of a killer blow. She travels and keeps on, but doesn’t have the same finishing punch as the selection.
Roaring Home looks solid on paper but tends to weaken when it matters, while Voodoo Angel may be flattered by the likely pace but has a long-standing habit of finding one too good. The rest have too much to prove.
Verdict
This comes down to a simple call: trust the ratings or overplay the pace angle.
In this grade, the percentages favour the ratings.
Service Minimum is the best horse in the race, dropping in class, and has the strongest finish. If she gets even a fair run at it, she should win.
Selection: Service Minimum
Saver: Eastern Shores
