This looks like a typical low-grade handicap at first glance, but the pace map tells a more interesting story. Two confirmed front runners in Giorgio M and Highland Olly should ensure this is run at a fair clip, with a couple of prominent racers keeping them honest. The overall shape leans towards strong pace pressure with a moderate risk of collapse, which brings the hold-up horses into play late on.
That said, you can’t ignore the ratings.
Farasi Lane sits miles clear on the HRB TimeWise figures and that matters. Rank 1 runners dominate these races for a reason, and this one comes here in form having won over further at the track last week. The drop back to 7f is no issue, and tactically he’s flexible enough to sit just off the pace rather than get dragged into a battle up front. He doesn’t need things to fall apart — just a clean run and a repeat of his latest effort likely sees him go very close.
The obvious alternative is He’s A Gentleman, the only other runner that fits the ratings profile. He’s a proven course performer and was unlucky not to win last time, but there’s a slight concern that he can find less than ideal off a strong pace. In a race where late strength could be decisive, that tempers confidence slightly.
Of the rest, Pearly Squirrel is interesting as a recent C&D winner who finishes well, while Al Muqdad, Chifa, and Cephalus all profile as strong closers suited by the setup. The problem is consistency and, more importantly, the ratings — they simply don’t match the top two and need the race to collapse to have a say.
Timeform sides with Habrdi, but he sits outside the key top two in the ratings and doesn’t have enough in hand to justify going against the usual winning profile.
In races like this, it pays to stay disciplined. The pace may bring others into it, but the most likely winner still sits at the top of the pile.
Selection: Farasi Lane
Saver: He’s A Gentleman
