3.00 Southwell – Novices’ Handicap Chase🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a small-field novice that will likely be decided by position rather than ability.
The Comment Shaper flags a weakly run race with no obvious front runner, but digging deeper alongside Timeform, there’s a clear angle: Intenzo is very likely to get an uncontested lead. In a race where four of the six runners are habitual hold-up types and the overall finishing strength is modest, that matters a great deal.
These types of races rarely fall apart. They tend to turn into tactical affairs where the horse in front controls the tempo and kicks off the bend. If that scenario plays out, those coming from the rear will struggle to land a blow.
On ratings, Ukantango sits clear as HRB Rank 1, and that demands respect. He’s well treated on old form and has a strong late finish, but everything about his profile suggests he needs a proper pace to aim at. There’s little evidence he’ll get it here.
Big Boy Barney (Rank 2) is the obvious alternative on the figures, but his recent win came in a weak race and his quirks remain. He doesn’t have the tactical edge and is unlikely to be ideally positioned if this turns into a crawl.
That leaves Intenzo (Rank 3). Normally you’d be cautious stepping outside the top two in the ratings, but this is a clear exception. He shaped well on his chasing debut, is open to improvement, and crucially looks set to dominate the race from the front without pressure. In this setup, that’s a major advantage.
The rest have bits and pieces of form but either lack consistency or are poorly suited to the likely race shape.
This comes down to a simple call: back the best horse, or back the horse with the best setup. In this case, the setup wins.
Selection: Intenzo
Saver: Ukantango
Verdict: Medium
