This is a race that looks straightforward on ratings at first glance, but the shape tells a different story — and that’s where the edge lies.
Feach Amach tops the HRB TimeWise Master ratings by a clear margin and comes here in form after a smooth win at Musselburgh. She’s progressive, handles the track and has the profile of a typical winner at this level. On raw figures alone, she’s the one to beat.
However, this doesn’t look like a race that will be run to suit.
The Comment Shaper and Timeform both point towards a steady to even tactical pace, with Atlantic Lad likely to get an uncontested lead. Around Kelso over this trip, that matters. Races like this are often decided by positioning rather than finishing speed.
That immediately puts pressure on the hold-up and mid-division types — including Feach Amach — who may find themselves with too much to do.
The one horse who looks perfectly positioned is Guet Apens.
He sits third on the ratings, which normally isn’t ideal, but there’s enough here to justify stepping outside the top two. He’s lightly raced, open to improvement, and shaped well when winning at Carlisle. Crucially, his run style — tracking the leaders — fits this race perfectly. He should get a clean tow into it and be the first to strike when they turn in.
There’s also a strong trainer angle in play with the step up in trip, and Timeform are firmly in his corner.
Dedicated Hero, second on ratings, has the ability but arrives with questions after a poor run and a breathing operation. He’s also likely to be played late, which may not suit the way this race unfolds.
Atlantic Lad is the pace angle and could get his own way in front, but there are enough doubts about his finishing effort under pressure to leave him alone for win purposes.
In the end, this comes down to a clash between ratings strength and race shape. Feach Amach is the solid, percentage call — but Guet Apens has the tactical setup and upside to take this.
