This doesn’t look like a race to get clever with.
All the key angles — HRB ratings, Timeform, and Comment Shaper — point firmly in one direction, and when that happens in a Class 5 handicap, it usually pays to keep things simple.
The Italian Fox – the one they all have to beat
The TimeWise Master Rank 1 horse dominates the figures and that matters. Historically, this is exactly where most winners come from, and this one isn’t just top — he’s clear top.
Last week’s 14-length demolition over course and distance wasn’t a fluke. He travelled strongly, jumped well and put the race to bed with ease. Crucially, he’s turned out quickly under a penalty but still effectively 7lb well-in. That’s a major edge at this level.
Tactically, he looks set to get a very workable race. Comment Shaper points to a single front runner and moderate early pressure, which should allow him to either dictate or sit comfortably on the pace. Either way, he won’t be inconvenienced.
Timeform’s pace angle backs this up — the setup is expected to suit him and blunt the late closers.
Groom De Cotte – solid but reliant on race shape
If you’re looking for the obvious alternative, it’s Groom De Cotte (Rank 2).
He’s consistent, stays well and is flagged as a strong late finisher. On raw profile, he’s the one most likely to capitalise if things fall apart up front.
The problem is the race may not collapse enough.
Comment Shaper rates the collapse risk as only moderate, and in a race lacking sustained pressure, hold-up types can easily be left with too much to do. He’s solid, but he’s also dependent on others underperforming.
The rest – plenty of reasons to oppose
Bobalot: Strong finisher but becoming expensive to follow. Keeps hitting the frame without winning and the pace setup isn’t ideal.
Galassian: Rank 3, but out of form and headgear hasn’t helped. Hard to make a case.
The remainder look either out of form, limited, or both.
Race shape is key
This isn’t a chaotic handicap. It looks like a controlled, steady race where the pace is unlikely to collapse dramatically.
That favours:
Horses on or near the pace
Horses who can travel and quicken
It does not favour:
Deep closers needing a strong gallop
That’s a big tick for the favourite.
Verdict
Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one.
The Italian Fox ticks every box:
Clear Rank 1
Well-in at the weights
Proven course and distance form
Pace advantage
Unless the quick turnaround catches him out, he should take plenty of stopping.
Selection: The Italian Fox
Confidence: Strong
