Championships Handicap
This is a proper Class 2 handicap and one where the pace setup is absolutely central to the outcome.
All the data points in the same direction. Comment Shaper flags a strongly run race with pressure behind a lone leader, while Timeform go even harder — calling it a very strong pace and highlighting a clear bias towards hold-up performers at this track and trip.
That immediately puts the spotlight on how this race will be run, not just who is best on paper.
The Ratings Anchor
The HRB TimeWise figures are decisive:
Stateira – clear Rank 1
Carolina Jetstream – clear Rank 2
Gap to the rest
Historically, that matters. Most winners come from the top two, and more often than not the top-rated horse delivers. That keeps the focus firmly on Stateira, who arrives unbeaten at Newcastle and visually impressive in her trial win.
She travelled strongly, quickened decisively and put the race to bed in a matter of strides. A 10lb rise asks a question, but she still looks ahead of her mark on pure ability. On ratings and profile alone, she is the one to beat.
The Problem: Pace
The issue is straightforward.
Stateira is not a hold-up horse. She sits handy, and in a race where the early fractions are expected to be strong, that could leave her exposed late on.
Timeform explicitly warn that this setup may work against her, which is not something to ignore in a race like this at Newcastle, where strong gallops often favour those coming from off the pace.
Carolina Jetstream, likely to lead, has a similar concern. She’s progressive and could get an easy lead on paper, but the projected pressure suggests she won’t get things her own way. In a race run at this tempo, front-end types often become targets late.
The Closers
This is where the danger lies.
Ziggy’s Queen makes plenty of appeal in the context of the race shape. She’s a strong finisher, arrives in form, and her turn of foot at Lingfield last time fits perfectly with what’s required here. Timeform are very positive about her chance given the likely pace scenario.
Similarly, Indigo Dream is the type to be suited by a strong gallop, especially with Jamie Spencer booked. She wasn’t beaten as far as it looked behind Stateira in the trial and could get much closer this time if things collapse late.
The problem with both is simple — they are not top two on HRB ratings, and that is a major negative in a race like this.
The Verdict
There is a clear tension in this race:
Ratings and proven class point to Stateira
Pace and race setup point towards closers like Ziggy’s Queen
In these situations, the ratings still carry the most weight. Stateira has already shown she handles the track, has the best figures in the field, and is open to further improvement. She may not get the perfect setup, but she has the class to overcome it.
Ziggy’s Queen is the obvious danger if the race unfolds exactly as predicted, but she still needs to outperform her rating band to win.
Selection
STATEIRA (FR)
Saver: ZIGGY’S QUEEN (IRE)
Strength of Selection: MEDIUM
The best horse is clear, but the race setup introduces enough doubt to temper confidence.
