The 2.05 at Lingfield🏇⤵️👇

·

The 2.05 at Lingfield, the Midnite All-Weather Vase Marathon Handicap, looks competitive on paper but the data points us in a fairly tight direction.
The first thing to address is the pace. Comment Shaper shows no confirmed front runner and a cluster of prominent racers likely to apply pressure just behind the lead. That usually creates the potential for a messy, tactical race rather than a true stamina test. Despite a moderate collapse risk, Timeform suggests the tempo may not be overly strong, which is important. It tempers enthusiasm for the obvious hold-up horses who will need things to fall perfectly.
With that in mind, this race should favour a horse that can sit handy without getting dragged into a battle too early.
From an HRB perspective, the focus is clear. St Faz sits top of the TimeWise Master ratings and there is a healthy gap back to Shrimp Shady in second. Historically, that matters. The majority of winners come from the top two ranked horses, and this looks another race where that trend is likely to hold.
St Faz is the obvious starting point. He’s 3-3 on the all-weather for his current yard and arrives here in peak form after a recent win. Yes, he’s effectively 11lb higher, but he’s progressing quickly and his profile suggests he can absorb that rise. Tactically, he’s also well suited. He can track the pace without needing things to be run to suit, which is a major asset in a race lacking a natural leader.
Shrimp Shady is the only serious alternative on the ratings. He’s progressive and comes here off a win, but that success came in a tight finish and this is a deeper race. He’s also likely to be part of that prominent group, which could leave him vulnerable late on if the race becomes a grind.
There are dangers, most notably Diamond Bay, who has a strong course record and will be finishing late. However, he may not get the strong pace he ideally needs. Similar comments apply to Charlie’s Choice and Riyami, both of whom rely on the race collapsing to show their best.
Selenic is interesting with cheekpieces applied and stepping up in trip for a yard that excels with stayers, but she sits outside the key ratings bracket and may still be learning her trade at this distance.
In summary, this looks like a race where positioning will be more important than outright finishing speed. That plays directly into the hands of St Faz, who brings the best combination of current form, tactical versatility and top-ranked rating.
Selection: St Faz (FR)
Saver: Shrimp Shady
Verdict: Medium confidence
