This is a tight little handicap chase where the market has it about right, but the shape of the race gives us a clear way in.
There’s no obvious front runner and only modest early pressure expected. That matters. Without a strong pace, these races tend to favour horses sitting handy rather than those played late. Despite a few noted strong finishers in the field, the data points to a low collapse risk, so don’t expect this to fall apart up the straight.
That brings Sky Lord firmly into focus. He ticks the right boxes: handicap debut, from a yard that won this race last year, and crucially, he’s the only course winner in the field. Timeform are solidly behind him and his mark looks workable. Tactically, he should get a straightforward run just behind the pace — or even end up dictating.
The issue is well known. He travels like the best horse and has a habit of not finishing the job. That’s not a one-off, it’s a pattern. But this is a weaker setup than he’s faced before, and the lack of pace should blunt that vulnerability.
The Busy Fool is the obvious danger. He’s the strongest finisher in the race on the Comment Shaper data and shaped very well last time at Naas. First-time cheekpieces could eke out a bit more. The problem is the race setup — he’s likely to be played late in a race that may not come back to him.
River Vale sits in a similar camp. Another strong finisher with headgear applied, but older, less consistent over fences, and again dependent on a pace scenario that may not materialise.
The rest look up against it. Glenashling could improve in handicaps but doesn’t find much off the bridle. Champagne Mahler is out of sorts. The remainder either lack form or resolution.
This looks like a race where position will be everything. If Sky Lord gets into a rhythm near the front, he’ll take passing. If he finds off the bridle again, The Busy Fool is the one who will be finishing best.
