This is a typical low-grade Bath sprint on paper, but the shape of the race makes it far more interesting than your average Class 6.
All the key tools point the same way. HRB Comment Shaper flags a very strong pace with high collapse risk, Timeform says the pace will be strong, and Racing Post notes there’s no shortage of early speed. In short, they are likely to go hard — and at Bath over 5f, that can catch plenty out.
There are at least two confirmed front runners in So Smart and Level Up, with others like Twilight Madness happiest racing prominently. None of them are bombproof finishers. If they overdo it early, they will come back to the field late on.
That immediately shifts the focus away from the obvious pace angles and towards something that can sit off it and finish.
On ratings, Twilight Madness and Hidden Verse dominate the HRB TimeWise figures, and historically that is where most winners come from. The problem is tactical. Twilight Madness is far more effective on the all-weather and is likely to be involved early, while Hidden Verse returns from a long absence and may not get the ideal run of the race.
Call Time, third on ratings, is a more logical fit on run style but lacks strong backing from the analysts and looks more of a placer than a winner.
The race instead sets up perfectly for Dandy Dinmont. He is not top-ranked on TimeWise, which tempers confidence, but almost everything else is in his favour. He tends to race from mid-division, finishes his races well, and drops back into Class 6 company after holding his own in slightly better contests. Both Timeform and Racing Post make positive noises about his chance, and crucially, he is exactly the type to benefit if the leaders go too hard.
At bigger prices, Diamondsinthesand is not without interest. He is drawn low, stays on well, and Timeform specifically highlighted him as one who could benefit from the expected pace. But he returns from a break and is not as solid as the selection.
Secret Handsheikh will have his supporters given his course record and a good draw, but there is a suspicion he could get dragged into the wrong part of the race if things get too competitive up front.
In a race likely to be decided late, the percentage call is the one who will still be finishing.
Dandy Dinmont is that horse.
Verdict: Medium confidence.
