This is a small-field handicap where the usual noise can be stripped away quickly. The data, the ratings and the likely pace all point in the same direction.
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings have Brother Boris clear top (Rank 1) with a sizeable gap back to Reforme in second. That matters. In races like this, the winner overwhelmingly comes from the top two, and more often than not it’s the top-rated that delivers — especially when there’s daylight on the figures.
Looking at the race shape, Comment Shaper suggests two front runners but only moderate competition for the lead and, importantly, a low collapse risk. That’s key. This isn’t shaping up to be a burn-up. At Fakenham, that usually means those on or near the pace are heavily favoured.
That plays straight into the hands of Brother Boris. He’s made all in his last two starts over this course and distance, jumping well and dictating throughout. Timeform’s note is blunt — he’s dangerous if allowed a soft lead — and nothing in this field guarantees he won’t get one. Even if he has company early, it doesn’t look strong enough pressure to force a collapse.
Cloudy Wednesday is the obvious fly in the ointment. He’s won this race twice and loves the track, but he’s only third on the ratings and may end up compromising his own chance if taking on Boris too aggressively. He looks more of a danger on paper than in the likely run of the race.
Reforme is the only one who makes sense as an alternative. He’s a strong finisher and holds solid Rank 2 status, but the pace setup isn’t ideal. With a low likelihood of the race falling apart late, he may simply have too much ground to make up.
The rest have too many questions. Crac De Megaudais hasn’t backed up early promise over fences, and Another Mystery remains winless in this sphere and looks poorly suited by how this race will unfold.
Everything comes back to the same conclusion. The top-rated, in form, proven over course and distance, and tactically favoured. In a race lacking depth, that’s usually enough.
Verdict: Brother Boris is the one they all have to beat.
Strength: STRONG
