4.50 Wolverhampton – Follow AtTheRaces On X Handicap (Div 1)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is your typical low-grade sprint on paper, but the data cuts through the noise quickly. The key angles here are race shape and the HRB rankings, and both point in the same direction.
The pace looks strong. Two front runners in Macarone and On Key are likely to go forward, but neither are reliable finishers. There’s also pressure from prominent racers, which should ensure a genuinely run race. In these scenarios at Wolverhampton, races often set up for something sitting just off the speed or coming through late.
That immediately brings the stronger finishers into play. Rye, Rain Cap and South Shore are all flagged by Comment Shaper, but you still need the right profile to actually get the job done — and that’s where the HRB ratings come in.
Von Krolock tops the TimeWise rankings, and that matters. Rank 1 is the most profitable and reliable position long-term, and this horse brings recent form to back it up. He’s been running well over 7f, winning here and following up with solid placed efforts. The drop to 6f is a slight question, but in a strongly run race it may actually suit, especially given he’s shown he can travel and finish his races.
Rye is the obvious alternative. He’s consistent, finishes well and should get the race run to suit. The issue is straightforward — he doesn’t win. He’s had plenty of chances and keeps finding one or two too strong. That makes him more of a place or saver option rather than a confident win selection.
Dancing With Drums will be popular and is respected, especially given his two handicap wins last year. However, he’s been off for over 200 days and switches yards. In a race likely to be run at a strong tempo, taking a short price about fitness and race sharpness is a risk.
The rest have bits and pieces of form but don’t profile as winners. Rain Cap is exposed, South Shore may come on for a run, and the front runners look vulnerable if the pace unfolds as expected.
This race should be run to suit something solid, in form and positioned to strike late. Von Krolock ticks those boxes better than the rest.
Selection: Von Krolock (IRE)
Saver: Rye
Strength: Strong
