3.57 Pontefract – Ponte Premiership Handicap (5f)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a proper Class 2 sprint and the kind where getting the race shape right is half the battle.
The Comment Shaper data points to a strongly run race, but not in a straightforward way. There’s no natural front runner, yet six horses want to be prominent. That usually creates early pressure without control, and at Pontefract’s sharp 5f that can turn tactical rather than a pure burn-up. The collapse risk is only moderate, not guaranteed.
So this isn’t a simple “back a hold-up horse” scenario. Positioning just off the speed looks optimal.
The Ratings Angle
The HRB TimeWise Master figures are very clear:
Atomic Force – Rank 1
Spartan Arrow – Rank 2
Dark Cloud Rising – Rank 3
Historically, this is where you focus. The winner overwhelmingly comes from the top two, and building the case outside that needs something exceptional.
The Main Players
Atomic Force comes here in form having rattled off two wins on the all-weather. His last run figure is strong and he tops the ratings for a reason. The issue is obvious enough—this is turf, a deeper race, and his run style (mid-division) doesn’t scream “perfect fit” given how this race could unfold.
Spartan Arrow is far more interesting than his recent form suggests. He was a Group 3 winner last year and has been running poorly in Meydan and on the all-weather since. That’s dragged his profile down, but this is a very different setup.
Crucially:
He’s a tracker of the pace, not a tearaway
Timeform specifically flag that the pace scenario suits him
He drops back into a more suitable race environment
In a race lacking a leader, he’s the one most likely to get first run without fighting for position.
Dark Cloud Rising is solid and consistent, with course form in the book, but looks more of a placer. He doesn’t have the tactical edge of Spartan Arrow or the raw rating strength of Atomic Force.
The Dangers
Kylian and Elegant Erin will be finishing late and could pick up pieces if things collapse, but they’re hostage to how the race unfolds.
Arklow Lad is the fashionable pick with headgear and a positive Timeform push, but the HRB ratings don’t back him up strongly enough in a race like this.
Verdict
This looks like a race where track position and tactical speed matter more than outright finishing power.
Atomic Force is the obvious one on ratings, but has enough question marks switching back to turf in a race that may not suit his run style.
Spartan Arrow, on the other hand, is set up perfectly:
Right part of the ratings (Rank 2)
Ideal run style for the likely pace scenario
Proven class edge over this field
If he bounces back even slightly, he’s the one who gets the run of the race.
Selection: Spartan Arrow (IRE)
Saver: Atomic Force
Confidence: Medium
