5.35 Pontefract – Sue Sheppard Memorial Handicap (5f)🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a typical low-grade Pontefract sprint on paper, but the shape of the race gives it more depth than usual. The Comment Shaper data points to a strongly run contest with a high collapse risk, driven by at least two confirmed front runners and a cluster of prominent racers forcing the issue early. That matters.
Pontefract’s 5f track can favour those close to the speed, but when the pace gets overcooked, races like this often fall apart late. The key is finding something that sits just off the speed and finishes strongly — not one buried out the back with too much to do.
From an HRB TimeWise perspective, the focus is clear. Sergeant Mayer sits top of the ratings and that carries weight. Rank 1 horses dominate these races long-term, and this one has the profile to match. Two turf wins at 5f last season, now back on a workable mark, and crucially, flagged as a strong late finisher. In a race likely to be set up for something finishing, he ticks the right boxes. The obvious question is fitness after 168 days off, but in this grade, that’s a risk worth taking.
Harb is the only realistic alternative on the numbers. He’s race-fit, consistent, and proven off this mark. His run style is more adaptable too — he won’t be as dependent on a total pace collapse as some others. If the race doesn’t completely fall apart, he’s the one most likely to pick up the pieces.
Of the rest, Lucius Aurelius will be popular and has been highlighted by Timeform, but his HRB rank tempers enthusiasm. He needs things to drop perfectly. Canaria Queen and Kitaab are strong finishers on the Comment Shaper data, but both come with enough inconsistency and questions around positioning to make them risky win bets. Pinjarra looks part of the problem rather than the solution — likely to contribute to the pace burn rather than benefit from it.
In summary, this looks set up for a closer, but not a deep one. The ratings, the likely pace, and the finishing profiles all point in the same direction.
Sergeant Mayer is the selection, with Harb as the saver.
Verdict: Medium confidence
