The early pressure figure of 5.81 and a high collapse risk tell you everything — this is very likely to set up for something coming late.
When races are run like this at Southwell over 7f, they often fall apart in the final furlong. You don’t want to be on the speed; you want a horse that can sit off it and finish strongly.
That immediately puts the focus on the top of the HRB ratings, where Bomb Squad and Reginald Charles dominate. As ever, the bulk of winners come from the top two ranked horses, and there’s no reason to overcomplicate it here.
Bomb Squad is the top-rated and arrives in consistent form, but he’s drawn wide in stall 13 and tends to race handily. In a race where the pace is expected to collapse, that’s not ideal. He could easily find himself doing too much too soon and becoming vulnerable late on.
Reginald Charles, on the other hand, looks tailor-made for this scenario. He’s a proven course-and-distance winner who scored in a strongly run race, exactly the kind of setup he gets here. His run style is patient, his finishing effort is reliable, and the Comment Shaper flags him as one of the strongest late finishers in the field. Everything about his profile fits the race shape.
Camera Shy is the only other one worth a mention. Another strong closer and a recent C&D winner, but the wide draw and hold-up style combination brings traffic risks, and he sits below the top two on ratings.
The rest look opposable. Raft Up is consistent but may not get the race run to suit ideally, while Wrydcroft is the Timeform pick but lacks the match fitness edge and doesn’t sit where you want in the ratings hierarchy.
This should be run at a strong tempo, and when that happens at Southwell, it usually pays to side with a proven closer. Reginald Charles ticks the most boxes and gets the vote, with Bomb Squad the obvious saver on ratings.
