This race revolves around one thing: pace.
All the data points in the same direction. Comment Shaper flags a very strong pace scenario, Timeform agrees, and the field backs it up — two front runners and multiple prominent racers in a tight track layout. That’s a recipe for pressure, not control.
When that happens at Fontwell, races tend to fall apart late.
The Favourite – Vulnerable?
Rap Soul sits top of the HRB ratings and comes here chasing a hat-trick. On bare form, he’s the obvious one. Progressive, improving, and clearly ahead on recent figures.
But there are cracks.
He’s a habitual front-end racer in a race where the lead is contested. Comment Shaper highlights a tendency to weaken late, and Timeform explicitly states the likely pace will diminish his chance.
At odds-on, that’s enough to take him on.
The Race Setup
This isn’t about who is best in isolation — it’s about who benefits from the way the race will be run.
Strong early pace
Pressure up front
Likely late attrition
That shifts the focus firmly onto hold-up and mid-division runners with proven finishing effort.
The Main Players
Wellwillya stands out on that basis.
He’s a strong late finisher, tactically versatile but usually ridden off the pace, and already proven at Fontwell. His recent second at Exeter after a long break suggests he’s coming to the boil at the right time.
Crucially, he’s exactly the type you want in a race that could collapse. Everything about his profile fits today.
Valirann Gold is the other one to consider. Second on HRB ratings and another who finishes strongly. He arrives off a recent course win and should be doing his best work late again.
He’s not as solid as Wellwillya, but he fits the shape.
The Rest
Gorcombe Moonshine is likely to be part of the pace and could pay for it late. Kill The Groove lacks chasing experience, and Hobie looks out of form despite headgear tweaks. The remainder have too much to prove.
The Verdict
This is a classic case of race shape over raw ratings.
Rap Soul may well be the best horse in the race, but today’s setup does him no favours. With pressure likely from the outset, the race should be set up for something coming through late.
Wellwillya is the one that ticks the most boxes — proven stamina, strong finish, and the ideal run style for how this will unfold.
Valirann Gold is the saver.
Selection: Wellwillya
Confidence: Medium
