Sir Benedict the one to beat in frantic Catterick sprint
The 1.38 at Catterick looks a typical low-grade 5f handicap on the surface, but the shape of the race gives it a clear angle.
Comment Shaper points to a strong pace collapse risk. There are two front runners, four prominent racers and the overall early pressure figure is high. In plain terms, there should be no hanging about. They are likely to go hard from the gate, and that can leave the race wide open for something played late.
That immediately brings Sir Benedict into the picture.
He is top rated on HRB TimeWise Master, and that is where the analysis should start. Rank 1 has the best historical strike rate and, in races like this, there is no need to get clever for the sake of it. The top-rated horse is often the right horse, and here the profile backs the numbers up.
Sir Benedict is a hold-up runner with a proven habit of staying on late. Comment Shaper flags him as a strong finisher and that looks ideal in a race where several rivals are likely to do too much too soon. He does not need to win the early battle. He just needs the leaders to cut each other’s throats and then pick them off.
The obvious danger on raw HRB figures is Tommytwohoots, the number two ranked horse. That makes him the main alternative, but there is a catch. His run-style notes suggest he can race prominently and weaken badly. In a race expected to be run at a fierce gallop, that is hardly an ideal setup.
The more interesting threat is Latin Five. He is not in the top two on the ratings, which normally makes him opposable, but this is one of the few cases where there is enough support from the shape data to take him seriously. He is another strong late finisher, and if the front end completely folds, he could be the one arriving on the scene.
There are reasons not to go overboard. These Catterick sprints can be messy. Hold-up horses need luck, a gap at the right time and a rider who does not leave it too late. But even allowing for that, Sir Benedict makes the most appeal.
He has the best HRB figure, the right run style, and the race should be run to suit.
Selection: Sir Benedict
Main danger: Latin Five
Confidence: Medium
