Straightforward race on paper – if you trust the data
This is a small field but a proper Grade 1, and the key to it lies in two areas: ratings and race shape.
—
The Shape of the Race
Comment Shaper points to a strongly run race with Protektorat and Pic D’Orhy likely to force the pace. That immediately raises a red flag for both.
A strong gallop over this trip at Aintree tends to favour horses who can sit just off it and finish strongly, rather than those doing the donkey work up front.
That puts the emphasis firmly on:
Jango Baie
Impaire Et Passe
Spillane’s Tower

The Ratings Don’t Lie
HRB TimeWise Master has this very clear:
Jango Baie – Rank 1
Protektorat – Rank 2
The rest are playing catch-up
Historically, the winner comes from the top two, and more often than not from Rank 1. That alone narrows this down significantly.
—
The Main Contenders
Jango Baie
He brings the best form into the race by some distance. A Gold Cup second is the standout piece of form on offer and marks him down as top class.
He’s also a strong finisher, tactically versatile, and still improving. The race setup looks ideal if the pace unfolds as expected.
The only question is whether that Cheltenham effort has left a mark. If it hasn’t, he’s the one they all have to beat.
—
Protektorat
Ultra-consistent and arrives in form, but likely ends up too close to a strong pace.
At 11, and in a race that may not play to his strengths tactically, he looks more like a place or saver option than the winner.
—
Impaire Et Passe
The Aintree record (2 from 2) is a big positive and he’s another who will be finishing late.
However, his overall profile this season is patchy and the HRB rating (Rank 5) is a major concern. He needs to bounce back in a big way.
—
Spillane’s Tower
Unexposed and progressive, but this is a step into deep waters against hardened Grade 1 performers.
He has the right run style, just not quite the same level of proven ability.
—
Pic D’Orhy
Another who is likely to be involved early, which is a negative given the projected pace. Hard to see him lasting it out in this setup.
—
The Verdict
This race sets up cleanly.
A strong pace, high-quality field, and a clear standout on ratings and recent form. Jango Baie ticks every box – class, profile, and suitability to how the race should unfold.
If he runs to his Gold Cup level, the others are playing for second.
Selection: Jango Baie
Saver: Protektorat
Confidence: Strong
