Nottingham 2.22 looks straightforward at first glance, but like most early-season 2yo races, it’s built on partial evidence. With no racecourse form to lean on, the focus shifts to trainer patterns, jockey strength, and sprint pedigrees. In that context, this is a top-heavy race.
Karl Burke’s Final Appeal sets the standard. Burke’s record with juveniles, particularly in races like this, is consistently strong across every meaningful metric — track, class, race type and overall strike rate. Nothing in the profile is speculative. Clifford Lee is a reliable partner in this setup, and the dam brings a small but useful positive. This is not a flashy profile, but it is a dependable one, and in weak novice company that often proves enough.
The only runner with a profile that can seriously challenge is Blackberry Bold. The Newland yard is in form in the short term, and Rossa Ryan adds strength in the saddle with solid recent numbers. More importantly, the breeding is sharp and suitable — Havana Grey on the sire side and Brazen Beau underneath points clearly towards early speed over five furlongs. The question is not ability, but whether the yard can match Burke’s efficiency in this specific race type.
Behind those two, the race thins out quickly. Rotelle has a respectable trainer/jockey combination on paper, but much of that rests on small samples and the underlying horse data lacks strength. The profile suggests potential rather than readiness.
Greek Street comes from a stable in form, which gives it some chance of outrunning market expectations, but the supporting data is mixed and the jockey metrics do little to strengthen the case. It sits in the “possible but unconvincing” bracket.
The remaining pair, Invincible Isaac and Top Cote, have very little in their favour statistically. Both lack trainer strength, jockey backing, and meaningful standout angles. In a race where others at least have some structure to their profiles, they look up against it.
The shape of the race is clear. This revolves around Final Appeal versus Blackberry Bold. One brings depth and reliability through a proven yard; the other offers sharper recent signals and a more speed-driven pedigree.
The percentage call is Final Appeal — fewer unknowns, stronger overall framework. But if there is to be an upset, it almost certainly comes from Blackberry Bold. Beyond those two, it would take a significant surprise.
