5.15 Aintree – Nickel Coin Mares’ Grade 2: Pace vs Potential🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a proper mares’ bumper — deep field, unexposed runners, and plenty of noise in the market. The key is cutting through it.

Start with the favourite.
Princess Day is unbeaten, visually strong, and rightly heads the betting. She travelled like a smart mare at Newbury and is clearly progressing. There’s no need to oppose her for the sake of it — she sets the standard and could easily be up to this level.

But this is not a simple race.
The pace setup is aggressive. There are multiple front runners and prominent racers, which points to a strong early gallop. In bumpers, that matters. These races are often decided late, especially when inexperienced horses go too hard too soon.

That introduces risk for anything ridden forward — including solid, obvious types.

Timamzel is the obvious danger.
She brings the best recent form, including a dominant listed win. Statistically she stacks up, and she has tactical flexibility. The question is price. She’s respected, but not obviously underestimated.

The angle is improvement, not reputation.
This race type rewards unexposed runners who can step forward. That’s where Nan’s Choice comes in. She won despite still looking green, has moved to a top yard, and should improve again. She doesn’t need to lead, and that’s a big plus given the likely pace pressure.

Then there’s the pace collapse angle.
With so many forward-going types, the race could fall apart late. If it does, strong finishers come into play at big prices.

Seven Stars and Ladies Day both fit that mould. Neither has the standout profile on paper, but both are capable of finishing strongly off a fast pace. In a race like this, that can be enough to outrun big odds.

Bottom line
Princess Day is the right favourite and could simply be too good.
But the race shape creates opportunity.

If the pace collapses, this becomes a very different contest — and that’s where the value lies, not at the top of the market but just behind it, with runners who haven’t shown their full hand yet.
