Melling Chase (3.30 Aintree) – Straight Talking Preview🏇⤵️👇

·

This looks a tight Grade 1 on paper, but the data says otherwise. The HRB TimeWise ratings are clear — this is dominated by Heart Wood and Grey Dawning, and historically that’s where the winner comes from.
Heart Wood sets the standard. His Ryanair win wasn’t just visually impressive, it was backed up by a huge ratings spike (167.9 last run) and a career-best performance. He travelled strongly, quickened, and put the race to bed in a matter of strides. That profile is exactly what you want here.
The race shape strengthens his case further. Comment Shaper points to a strongly run race with high collapse risk — two front runners and plenty of pressure behind. That scenario typically favours horses who can sit handy and finish strongly off a fast pace, which is exactly how Heart Wood operates.
Grey Dawning is the only realistic danger. His Gold Cup run was better than the bare result and the drop back in trip is a big plus. First-time cheekpieces could sharpen him up too. However, he has a tendency to travel well and not always finish as strongly as expected, and in a race likely to be set up for a turn of foot late on, that’s a concern.
The rest have questions to answer.
Gidleigh Park and Solness are likely to contribute to the pace battle, which could undo both.
JPR One was well beaten by Heart Wood at Cheltenham and needs a swing in form.
L’Eau du Sud doesn’t look suited by the step up in trip.
Saint Segal is simply outclassed at this level.
This race should be run to suit, and when combining ratings, recent form and race shape, one horse comes out on top.
Verdict
Heart Wood is the one to beat and should take this if reproducing his Cheltenham form.
Strength: STRONG
