Maghull Novices’ Chase – Aintree 12:45🏇⤵️👇

·

Strong pace, late collapse, and a value angle against the favourite
This year’s Maghull sets up to be run at a ferocious gallop. The Comment Shaper data is crystal clear — four front runners, strong early pressure (6.37), and a high risk of the race collapsing late on. In a two-mile Grade 1 around Aintree, that’s a major tactical pointer.
The Shape of the Race
There’s no hiding from it — this looks like a burn-up.
Salvator Mundi, Mighty Bandit, Be Aware and Mirabad all want to be on or near the lead. With Alnilam also prominent, the early fractions should be relentless. That kind of setup rarely favours those forcing it.
Instead, it points firmly towards a strong finisher delivered late.
Ratings Don’t Lie – But Context Matters
The HRB TimeWise Master ratings are headed by:
1st – Salvator Mundi
2nd – Kala Conti
Historically, the winner overwhelmingly comes from these two. That keeps the focus tight.
Salvator Mundi is the class act. A Grade 1 winner over hurdles at this track, trained by Mullins and ridden by Townend, he has the strongest overall profile. His latest win at Thurles suggests he’s getting to grips with fences.
But there’s a catch — he’s likely to be part of the early speed. In this setup, that’s a serious tactical negative.
The Case for Kala Conti
Kala Conti brings a very different profile:
Strong finisher with a proven turn of foot
Receives the mares’ allowance
Top-level form, including a dominant win over Kargese
Rated just shy of the favourite (Rank 2)
Most importantly, she looks tailor-made for how this race will unfold. If the leaders overdo it — and all evidence says they will — she’s the one best placed to pick up the pieces.
The Dangers
Mighty Bandit is progressive and thriving, but this is a completely different test and he’s likely to get caught in the pace battle.
No Questions Asked is interesting off a strong finish at Windsor and could benefit from the setup, but he lacks the class edge of the top two.
Be Aware has ability and now gets headgear tweaks, but his tendency to race keenly is a concern in a race like this.
Final Word
This looks like a race where tactics trump raw ability.
Salvator Mundi is the best horse on paper and rightly heads the ratings, but the likely pace scenario could leave him vulnerable late on.
Kala Conti, with her finishing strength and more patient style, is ideally positioned to capitalise.
Selection: Kala Conti
Verdict: Medium
The favourite is respected, but the race setup gives Kala Conti a clear tactical edge in what should be a strongly run Grade 1.
