This is a solid Class 3 handicap hurdle where the focus should be firmly on the top of the HRB ratings, and in this case that gives us a clear starting point.
Khafre tops the TimeWise Master ratings and that immediately puts him front and centre. Rank 1 runners win far more often than anything else, and unlike many in this field, he is progressive and arriving in form. Two recent wins at Taunton show he’s improving, and the step up in trip looks a plus rather than a concern. He’s the one with momentum, and that matters in races like this.
The race shape backs him up. There are two likely front runners in Time To Bite and Doc Mccoy, which should ensure a fair pace without it getting out of hand. The collapse risk is only moderate, so this isn’t likely to fall apart completely. Khafre is expected to sit just off the speed, which is often the ideal position — close enough to strike, but not doing too much early.
His finishing profile is another positive. He regularly stays on well and should be suited by this longer trip. In a race where not all runners are strong finishers, that gives him a clear edge.
Nardaran, the Rank 2 horse, is the main danger. He has strong trainer and jockey stats at Wincanton and comes from a yard that targets races like this. However, his recent form is a bit patchy and he still needs to show he’s fully back to his best.
John Barbour is the interesting one outside the top two. He’s a strong finisher and could be suited if the pace lifts, but he’s coming off a poor run and, importantly, sits outside the top two in the ratings — which is a negative based on long-term trends.
The rest all have something to prove, either on form, fitness, or how the race will be run.
The key points are simple:
Khafre is the top-rated and progressive runner
The race shape should suit his running style
His finishing strength and step up in trip are positives
Everything points the same way.
Khafre is the selection.
