The 2:50 at Kelso, a 0-140 Class 3 Handicap Hurdle over 2 miles, brings together a mix of progressive novices and battle-hardened handicappers. With just seven runners, there’s little room for each-way angles, so the focus is on identifying a strong win contender and any runner the market may be underestimating.
🚀 Strongest Contender: WISE EAGLE (11/10)
It’s no surprise to see Wise Eagle priced up as favourite, but there’s every reason to believe he can justify those odds. A smart performer on the Flat over staying trips, he’s taken well to hurdling, recording back-to-back wins by emphatic margins. The 23-length romp at Musselburgh and the 14-length stroll at Catterick showcased not only his class but his ability to quicken off a strong pace.
The key here is his handicap mark of 123, which could be a gift. His Flat rating (high 90s) suggests he’s running off a mark he could outclass, and the Timeform ‘p’ symbol highlights further improvement likely. With a solid pace forecast from Mack The Man, Wise Eagle should get the perfect tow into the race, and it will take something special to lower his colours.
💎 Market Sleeper: GIVEMEFIVE (7/1)
The market seems too quick to write off Givemefive, and there’s definite value in his current odds. Ignore his flat run at Windsor last time, where he was given a considerate ride once beaten. More important is his earlier Cheltenham success, where he showed battling qualities to defeat the useful Dodger Long. A mark of 130 reflects his class, and he’s already proven his ability on heavy ground over this trip.
The return to hurdles, combined with first-time cheekpieces, could sharpen him up, and it’s notable that Harry Derham’s runners often improve for their second start after a break. If Wise Eagle has any chinks in his armour, Givemefive is the one most likely to capitalise.

📝 Verdict (Hugh Taylor Style):
🏇 Strongest Contender: WISE EAGLE – Well-handicapped, progressive, and a cut above this field.
💎 Market Value Angle: GIVEMEFIVE – Classy back form and overpriced if bouncing back to his Cheltenham best.
I’ll be watching this one closely, as both Wise Eagle and Givemefive could be worth following beyond today.

I agree with your comments on Wise Eagle. Owned by a group of lads from a pub in Seahouse, who chipped in and bought him for a bit of fun and have found themselves laughing all the way to the bank, with flat winnings of £114k. The 8-year-old gelding has started his new career hurdling off well, with 2 wins and a place from 3 runs, and must have a great chance here off his current mark of 123.
