20:12 Carlisle – Grand Caledonia Finale Handicap (Pro-Am Female Jockeys) (Class 5, 1m1f, 0-75, 4yo+, Soft)

·

Pace & Draw Angles

The forecast strong pace should favour midfield/hold-up types, especially those conserving energy early.

High draws are disadvantaged at Carlisle over 1m1f when the ground is soft, particularly in large fields.

Notably, Anjo Bonita, usually prominent, may be compromised, while Tee Aitch Aye could be well positioned if ridden with restraint.

Contenders & Profiles

Top Contenders:

CATTON LADY (TFR 106, 6/10) – Progressive filly who won over C&D last time (softish ground), did so staying on from midfield. Up 3 lb but still looks well treated. Well drawn in 13.

BELLASIO (TFR 105, 6/10) – Won a division of the same race on 16 June, made all in a smaller field. Carries a penalty and now faces more pace pressure. Drawn 2 is ideal. Improving.

MILTEYE (TFR 104, 7/10) – Consistent and unlucky in running last time. Travels strongly and shapes as if this test suits. Still a maiden but reliable. Drawn 3.

Main Dangers:

IZZARI (TFR 103, 5/10) – Usually dropped in, which suits here. Third at Hamilton last time; trades bigger in running and rallies late. One for market watchers.

POET’S DAWN (TFR 102, 6/10) – Carlisle winner in the past, ran well at York and Ripon lately, solid profile with track form. Drawn 5 is fine.

TEE AITCH AYE (TFR 104, 6/10) – Ran a close third over C&D behind Catton Lady. Shaped well and could improve, drawn low and might get a smoother passage if ridden patiently.

Interesting Outsiders:

DISTINCTION (TFR 100, 4/10) – Won recently at Pontefract, then fair fourth over C&D. Consistent but possibly vulnerable to better handicapped rivals.

ALAZWAR (TFR 103, 4/10) – Disappointed last time but prior win in amateurs’ race was decent. Drawn 1. May try to go forward, which could be a disadvantage in this setup.

DESTINADO (TFR 103, 5/10) – Won early season. Often slowly away but finishes well. Probably wants further ideally, but can place with pace to run at.

Negative Profiles / Temperament Concerns:

ANJO BONITA (TFR 104, 3/10) – Soft ground and positive style against her here. Prominent racing style a poor fit.

CONTRAST (TFR 99, 3/10) – Off 248 days. Needs a strong gallop but has temperament quirks.

KEADY TOWN (TFR ?, 1/10) – No recent form of note. Wrong end of the weights and draw.

NEWTON DUKE (TFR 96, 2/10) – Yard has done well with castoffs, but no promise on recent return; better over longer.

Summary + Smart Play

This race is stacked with mid-tier handicappers, but the strong pace, soft going, and draw bias significantly shape the shortlist. Catton Lady is the most tactically and form-suited. Milteye is knocking hard and deserves to land one. Bellasio is likeable but may face more pressure up front here than in a small field last time.

Smart Play:

Win – CATTON LADY (7/1+ acceptable)

Each-Way Saver – MILTEYE (EW if 4 places available)

Both fit the ‘progressive or promising’ profile against more exposed rivals.
