3.55 Haydock – JCB Fastrac Handicap Chase🏇👇⤵️

·

This is a classic example of where race shape trumps everything.
On paper it looks competitive. In reality, the Comment Shaper data makes it far more straightforward. There are four habitual front runners in a seven-runner field, and the projected early pace is strong to the point of being unsustainable. That matters more than anything else here.
Imperial Bede, I Shut That Dor, Royal Deeside and Victoria Milano all want the lead. None are natural sit-and-wait types. At Haydock, over this trip, that kind of contested pace almost always leads to one outcome — they go too hard, and something picks them off late.
So the focus shifts immediately to horses that:
Sit just off the speed, or
Are proven strong finishers
That narrows things quickly.
From an HRB perspective, Bonza Boy is the clear starting point. He is Rank 1 on TimeWise Master, and that alone carries serious weight given the historical strike rate. More importantly, his run style fits the race perfectly. He races prominently without needing to lead, and his recent form shows he finishes his races off strongly at this trip. He is tactically the most likely horse to get the run of the race while others overdo it in front.
Count Adhemar, the Rank 2 horse, is the obvious alternative on ratings. He is progressive and arrives in form. However, there is a clear concern in his profile — he has a tendency to weaken late. In a race that is likely to be run at a strong, possibly brutal tempo, that is not a trait you want to be relying on. He looks more like a saver than a win bet.
The one who could capitalise if things completely fall apart is Heads Or Harps. He is a hold-up horse with a strong finishing profile and comes here in consistent form. The setup will suit him ideally. The issue is he sits outside the top two on HRB ratings, and historically that is a poor place to be unless everything falls perfectly. He is a danger, but not the percentage call.
As for the rest, they are largely victims of the race setup. The front runners are drawn into a battle they are unlikely to win collectively. Even if one tries to steady it, the presence of multiple pace angles makes that difficult. It is far more likely they compromise each other.
In races like this, the approach should be simple:
Trust the top-rated horse
Make sure the run style matches the projected shape
Avoid those caught in the pace war
Bonza Boy ticks every box.
Selection: Bonza Boy
Saver: Count Adhemar
Danger: Heads Or Harps
Verdict: Strong
