Karbau sets the standard in Fairyhouse handicap
The 5.00 at Fairyhouse looks the usual messy spring handicap on the surface, but the core of it is actually quite straightforward.
On the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, Karbau is the clear Rank 1 horse on 425.6, with Hello Neighbour the only runner close enough on 374.5 to be taken seriously as a proper alternative. That matters. These ratings are strongest at the top, and most winners come from the first two on the list. You do not need to overcomplicate it.
Karbau has the right profile for a race like this. He is lightly raced, still open to progress, and his sixth in the County Hurdle was better than the bare result. Timeform make the point that he met trouble and had more to give, which reads well coming into this. Back on home soil, in a race Willie Mullins has farmed with four winners in the last ten runnings, he makes plenty of appeal.
The obvious danger is Hello Neighbour. He is the only one who really fits the ratings-based approach as a genuine saver. His own Cheltenham effort was not without promise, and he has the class to be involved if bouncing back. The problem is that he has not really gone on this season as hoped, whereas Karbau still feels like a horse with untapped handicap upside.
The race shape is worth noting, but not enough to put me off the favourite. Comment Shaper points to Kotkito Bello as the single front runner, with a possible lone-lead scenario and only moderate early pressure. That could make life easier for those near the pace and slightly less ideal for the stronger closers. Even so, Karbau has the class to overcome that if getting the gaps.
Of the rest, Messerschmitt is probably the most solid each-way player. Timeform have him down as one of the main dangers, his Imperial Cup fourth was a fair effort in a hot race, and the return of the tongue tie is notable. He is not my idea of the winner, but he is one to respect. Murcia has a case on figures and stable power, but Townend siding with Karbau says enough.
There are a couple of headgear angles lower down. Zillow goes in first-time cheekpieces and Kalix Delabarriere also gets first-time cheekpieces, but both need a leap of faith on recent form. Hello Neighbour runs in a hood, Helvic Dream, Sony Bill, Bokamsin and Mode Avion keep the tongue tie, while Lord Erskine and Missus Beeton retain cheekpieces. None of that is enough to shift the main view.
Past renewals do not point to one narrow age trend, but they do underline that this is a race Mullins knows how to place one in. That brings it back to the same conclusion. The top-rated horse from the right yard, arriving off the right piece of form, is usually the place to start and often the place to finish.
Verdict: Karbau is the percentage call.
Main danger: Hello Neighbour
Value runner: Messerschmitt
Selection strength: Medium
