6.30 Lingfield – Helm Rock the one to beat, but Mr Baloo is a live danger

This looks like a proper mile handicap, not a dawdle and sprint. Comment Shaper points to a strong pace setup, with two front runners, plenty of prominent racers and a fair chance the race gets set up for something that can travel just off the speed and finish.

That matters.

In these races, I always want to start with the HRB TimeWise Master rankings, because most winners come from the top two, and this race is no different. The market and the ratings are both pointing the same way.

Helm Rock is the clear starting point. He is Rank 1 on TimeWise Master and comes here in form after winning at Kempton last week. His overall HRB total is comfortably the best in the field, and he looks the runner with the strongest recent body of work. He is not just a grinder either. Comment Shaper has him as a likely prominent racer with the ability to finish strongly, which is a useful mix in a race where the pace could get a bit heated.

There are a couple of knocks. He has a penalty to carry, and his Lingfield record is not as convincing as some of his Kempton form. Even so, he is the one with the fewest holes in his profile and the one they all have to beat.

Mr Baloo is the obvious danger. He is Rank 2 on TimeWise Master and, importantly, meets Helm Rock on 4lb better terms for an eight-day-old defeat at Kempton. That gives him every chance of closing the gap. He also gets first-time cheekpieces, which is the key equipment change in the race and could sharpen him up at the right time.

The worry with Mr Baloo is that his finishing profile is not as solid. Comment Shaper suggests he can weaken, and in a race likely to be run at a decent tempo that is not ideal. He is still the only serious alternative, but I would rather trust Helm Rock’s current profile.

Of the rest, Big Sip is the interesting outsider. He is only Rank 3, so he needs more than just the numbers, but the race shape does give him a squeak. He is flagged as a strong finisher, and if the pace collapses more than expected he could be the one staying on late. The issue is fitness and overall handicap substance after a long break.

Arctician and Epictetus both have tactical pace, but that may not be an advantage in this setup. With two front runners and several prominent racers in the field, there is a real chance they do too much too soon. Panama Black has changed yards, which is worth noting, but he still looks high enough in the weights for what he has shown. Warning Sign has a late-finishing profile and is not completely dismissed, but he needs a lot to fall right.

The key point in this race is simple. Do not overcomplicate it. The top of the HRB figures is where the answer is most likely to be, and the pace setup does not do enough to put me off the number one.

Verdict:
Helm Rock is the percentage call. He is the top-rated horse, arrives in form and has the run style to cope with how this race should unfold. Mr Baloo is the saver and the only one I would fear seriously.

Selection: Helm Rock
Danger: Mr Baloo
Confidence: Medium
