Beverley 5.45 – Havachoc can outstay them
This is not a race to get clever with. In these low-grade staying handicaps, the safest place to start is always the top of the HRB TimeWise rankings, and this race looks no different.
Arth’s Gold heads the ratings and comes here after a solid second over 1m4f at Southwell. On raw recent form he is an obvious player. The issue is that nearly all his better efforts have come on the all-weather. He is still a maiden after 12 starts and, for all he looks ready to win one, he does not look the one to trust blindly at a short price back on turf.
That brings in Havachoc, the clear second on the ratings and the one who makes most appeal as a betting proposition. He landed a hat-trick over this trip on the all-weather earlier in the year and has continued to hold his form well since. The key point here is that he looks well suited by the likely shape of the race. Comment Shaper suggests a solid gallop, with a weak lone front runner and enough pace pressure behind to ensure this is run properly. Havachoc races prominently, travels well and, importantly, tends to finish his races off strongly. In a race where several of these either weaken late or arrive with questions to answer, that is a major plus.
Highfield Comrade is the obvious one for the shortlist after the top two. He has been running consistently well on the all-weather and has at least shown he can cope with turf. He is not dismissed, but the numbers say the main win focus should remain with the top two in the ratings, and that is the right approach here.
There are a few lurking dangers. Freddy Robinson has course form and should strip fitter for his latest run, while Sisterandbrother and Sugarpiehoneybunch could pick up pieces if the race falls apart late. Even so, both look more like each-way types than win selections. Sea Master has bits of old course form, but his profile is patchy and he has not looked one to rely on.
The key to the race is simple enough. If Arth’s Gold brings his all-weather form to turf, he is a big danger. But he still has something to prove on grass and does not offer much margin for error at the prices. Havachoc also has a turf question, but he looks the more solid fit for the way this race should be run and appeals as the one most likely to get the job done if this turns into a proper test from some way out.
Verdict
Havachoc is the selection.
Arth’s Gold is the main danger.
Highfield Comrade is next best.
Key points
Havachoc is the preferred pick on race-shape grounds.
Arth’s Gold is top-rated but still unproven enough on turf.
Highfield Comrade is solid but may lack the edge of the top two.
Strong pace should suit a runner who can sit handy and finish, which points firmly towards Havachoc.
Selection strength: Medium
