The 2.32 at Newbury is one of those early-season maiden fillies’ races that usually throws up a smart one, and this year’s renewal looks no different. It is a 7f confined maiden for three-year-old fillies, all of them unraced, run on good ground, and the pedigree depth is strong right through the field.
On paper, Synchronicity is the obvious standard-setter. She is by Night Of Thunder, out of Syndicate, and is a sister to top-class Group 1 winner Ombudsman. That is the standout page in the race and the market has reacted accordingly. From a pure pedigree angle, she has the best raw ability profile in the field. The only issue is that everyone can see it. In races like this, the best-bred filly is often the shortest price, and that can leave little room for value.
If you are looking beyond the favourite, Song Of The Clouds makes plenty of appeal. She is also by Night Of Thunder, out of Token Of Love, and her family has already produced smart performers. Unlike some of the more glamorous fillies in the race, she looks a very clean fit for today’s test. There is enough class in the page, but just as importantly there is a strong suggestion that 7f on good ground first time out should suit well. In a race where some may want further in time, she looks one of the more straightforward debut 7f types.
Seet is another with an obvious chance. By Too Darn Hot out of Zero Gravity, she comes from a family packed with quality and has the pedigree of a filly who should be better than average. She looks more than capable of running well here, although there is a fair chance she will prove even better once stepping up in trip later on. That does not rule her out, but it is worth keeping in mind.
Sapphire Secret is also hard to dismiss on pedigree. She is by Kingman, out of Whatami, and comes from a deep, proven Juddmonte family. There is class all through the page and she has the sort of pedigree that suggests she will win races. The question is whether this sharp 7f maiden first time is ideal, or whether she too is a filly for a bit further once she gains experience.
One at a bigger price who makes some appeal is Tarrant. She lacks the fashionable shine of some of the bigger names, but she is by Space Blues out of a useful, proven mare in Just Joan, and the page makes plenty of sense for this exact setup. She looks one of the more practical 7f debut types in the race and could easily outrun market expectations.
Another possible value angle is Akademy Lady. By No Nay Never out of a Dubawi mare, she brings together speed and depth in a way that could work well over 7f. She is not as flashy on paper as Synchronicity or Seet, but she looks better balanced than her odds might suggest.
As for the rest, Bright Summer has a solid, reliable pedigree and should have enough ability, but there is a slight doubt whether she is more of a speed filly being asked to stretch out to 7f first time. Mother Dear and Cap Santa Lucia both appeal more as longer-term prospects, with their pedigrees suggesting they may want further and more time. Pierpoint is not without some each-way pedigree appeal, while Bundok and Lucky Luna look more vulnerable in this company.
The key point here is simple. Synchronicity has the best pedigree in the race, and if she is ready to go, she may simply be too good. But from a betting point of view, the more interesting angles may be Song Of The Clouds as the best race-fit pedigree, and Tarrant as the bigger-priced filly who could be underestimated.
Key points
Synchronicity has the strongest raw pedigree and is the one to beat.
Song Of The Clouds looks one of the best fits for a debut 7f maiden on good ground.
Seet and Sapphire Secret both have plenty of class but may be even better over further.
Tarrant is a likely overlooked runner with a sensible pedigree for this test.
Akademy Lady is another who could be better than the market suggests.
Verdict
The market has probably got the favourite right, but not necessarily the value. Synchronicity is the standard, Song Of The Clouds is the main danger on pedigree, and Tarrant looks the interesting outsider.
