5.05 Pontefract – Constant Security Serving Yorkshire Racecourses Handicap
Verdict: SPEEDING BULLET
This looks the sort of 5f Pontefract handicap where you do not want to get too clever. The HRB TimeWise Master figures have Speeding Bullet clear on top on 292.9, with Betweenthesticks second on 282.4. Given the strong historical bias towards the top two in these rankings, that is the right place to start and, in truth, the race revolves around them.
Speeding Bullet makes most appeal. He is the HRB rank 1 horse and that matters. He ended last season in good nick, notably when second in a better race at Haydock over 5f, and that piece of form reads well in the context of this Class 5. He is also a course winner, albeit over 6f here, and his profile suggests this mark is still workable. Paul Midgley has a solid record in this race according to the Timeform smart stats, and the Racing Post spotlight also sides with him. From stall 3, with David Nolan booked, he should get a sensible tow into it.
The slight concern is the lay-off, because he has not run for 228 days. But unlike some of these, he does not need everything to fall perfectly. The Comment Shaper summary says there is no obvious front runner, only moderate early pressure, and that is a positive for a horse like Speeding Bullet who can sit handy enough without being lit up too soon. In a race lacking a standout pace angle, class and finishing strength can matter more than usual, and his recent form stack is stronger than most.
Betweenthesticks is the obvious danger and the only meaningful alternative, exactly as the HRB top-two approach suggests. He is a C&D winner, arrives fit after winning at Wolverhampton, and Timeform likes his chance. The issue is that the Comment Shaper flags him as a prominent racer who can weaken late, and Timeform’s pace hint also notes he has a habit of trading shorter in-running without getting the job done. In a race with no guaranteed collapse up front, he could still be there a long way out, but he does not look bombproof at the finish.
Of the rest, Hidden Verse is interesting. He shaped well enough at Bath after a break, he is drawn 1, and his hold-up style could work if they go harder than expected. But he is only fourth on HRB totals, and with this methodology that makes him more of a place player than the main bet.
Dark Kestrel has the late kick the Comment Shaper likes, and he is one of the strongest finishers in the field, but he is a habitual slow starter and most of his best work has come on the all-weather. On turf, around Pontefract’s sharp 5f, giving away ground early is dangerous.
Military Girl has a fair reappearance profile and is below her last winning mark, while Komorkis is one of the more interesting improvers for a new yard with a hood added, but both need to step forward again.
Equipment and notable changes
Fuji Mountain: blinkers on first time, tongue tie still absent. Possible bounce-back angle, but not enough substance.
Komorkis: hood on first time and second run for new yard. Not dismissed.
Sergeant Mayer: usual cheekpieces refitted after latest run without them. Could improve, but not enough to make him the pick.
Trainer change angle: Komorkis has left Richard Fahey and shaped okay first time for Lawrence Mullaney. Worth noting, not enough to override the top two.
Race trend/style view Recent winners of this race do not suggest any extreme pattern, but this is usually a contest where being well treated and already effective at the track or trip counts for plenty. Speeding Bullet ticks the course box, the class box and the HRB rank 1 box.
Self-critique
The case against Speeding Bullet is straightforward: long absence, first run of the season, and no guaranteed pace collapse to bring his finishing effort fully into play. Betweenthesticks is fitter and more obvious from a recent winning perspective, and if he gets a soft enough lead or ideal prominent sit, he could simply outbattle them.
But on balance, Speeding Bullet still has the best overall profile. He has the strongest HRB figure, the best piece of recent form in the book, and fewer question marks than most once you strip it back.
