1.40 Doncaster – Auntie Jo can swoop late
This 5f Class 6 handicap looks the sort of race where the shape matters as much as the form, and the Comment Shaper points to a setup that should suit a closer rather than a horse forcing it from the front. There is only one likely front runner, but notably it is described as a weak one, while the overall pace pressure is strong enough to suggest those on or near the speed may be vulnerable late on.
That brings Auntie Jo firmly into the picture. She sits top of the HRB TimeWise Master ratings, and that matters. Historically, the bulk of winners come from the top two ranked horses, so the analysis should start there. Her recent form does not scream obvious winner, but she has shaped better than the bare results, and her running style fits what this race is likely to become. She is usually ridden patiently, often stays on, and in a race where the pace could collapse, that is a major plus.
Opal Storm, ranked second, is the obvious saver. She also has a strong late-finishing profile and arrives off a win, but her overall profile is less convincing and Timeform are not entirely sold on her backing that effort up.
Of the others, Doralee may get an easy lead on paper, but the data suggests she can weaken when it matters. No Gain has Timeform support and is interesting for a new yard, though the HRB position is not as persuasive.
The selection is AUNTIE JO.
She is not bombproof in a race like this, so the confidence call is medium.
